The Alameda Naval Base is one of my favorite East Bay locations for family sessions. The industrial architecture — weathered brick buildings, metal staircases, rusted doors — creates a backdrop you won’t find anywhere else in the Bay Area. It has a distinct, textured feel that works especially well for families who want something different from a redwood trail or a beach.

Why It Works for Family Sessions
The texture and scale of the buildings give the photos a more graphic, structured feel — different from what you’d get in a park or on the water. And because it’s such an open space, kids have room to move. There’s no set path or crowd to navigate. You can shift directions easily, find a staircase or a wall that catches the light, and let things unfold from there.
It also works across different conditions. Fog can make the space feel quiet and atmospheric, while a clear afternoon brings warm light against the industrial backdrop. Either way, it photographs well.
A Session at the Alameda Naval Base
This session was with a family I’ve known for a while — their son goes to school with mine. They chose the Alameda Naval Base because they got married nearby years ago, and coming back with their son felt like a meaningful way to mark that history.
Their son is eleven, and we worked with his love of basketball. Having something familiar to do made the session feel more relaxed, and some of the strongest images came from those moments.

Practical Notes
Alameda Point is a large site with several areas worth exploring. I recommend arriving with a little extra time to walk around and settle into a spot that works for your family.
Parking is easy — you park right at the site — and the space works well both in the morning and late afternoon, when the light is warmer and the site tends to be quieter. It’s open enough for younger kids to move freely, while still visually engaging for older kids.
