When families ask me about timing, my answer is pretty much always the same: plan around what works best for your schedule. Everyone will be happiest when the session fits naturally into your day rather than working around it. Interrupting nap or bedtimes never works, especially when trying to keep things fun and relaxed.
Golden hour gets a lot of attention — and when it works, it can be really beautiful. But depending on the time of year it can fall right around nap time or bedtime, and that’s not always realistic with young kids. The good news is you have years to plan golden hour sessions. And most East Bay outdoor locations, and in-home sessions, offer great light throughout the day — which gives you a lot of flexibility when planning Oakland family photography sessions.
1. Why Golden Hour Isn’t Always the Best Fit for Families
Golden hour—just after sunrise or before sunset—offers soft, warm light that makes everything glow. It’s especially beautiful at places like Alameda Beach or Garin Regional Park in Hayward, where the golden tones and open landscapes create a dreamy backdrop for family photos.
But for families with young kids, it’s often not the most realistic option.
I typically recommend scheduling sessions around your family’s natural rhythms—when children are rested and everyone feels most like themselves. That often means earlier in the day, when there’s less pressure and more energy.
The truth is, real life doesn’t always happen at sunset. And some of the most meaningful moments happen during morning routines, backyard play, or spontaneous cuddles in the living room. The light might look different, but the connection is every bit as beautiful.
2. Mornings Work Beautifully—Outdoors and Indoors
Morning sessions can also offer beautiful lighting, and for many families, they work better with young children’s routines. The East Bay has so many great locations that shine earlier in the day—Joaquin Miller Park in Oakland, the UC Botanical Garden in Berkeley, Tilden Regional Park in Berkeley, Piedmont Park, Blake Garden in Kensington, the Alameda Naval Base, or even your own living room. These are all flexible locations that work well in the mornings and afternoons.
In-home morning sessions are some of my favorites. They allow space for routines to unfold naturally—snuggling on the couch, baking together, reading stories—and the light filtering through your windows can be stunning. These sessions tend to feel relaxed and connected, capturing a deeper sense of home and family.
When families choose a time that works with their real lives—not against them—the session feels easier. Children are able to move naturally through the experience, without pressure or expectation. Everyone can simply be present together, and that’s when the most meaningful photographs naturally unfold.
3. Let Your Family’s Routine Guide the Timing
Rather than chasing perfect light, let’s work with what your family actually looks like on a regular morning or afternoon — whether that’s quiet time before nap or post-nap energy at the park. That’s when the most genuine moments happen.
4. Each Season Tells a Different Story
Every season in the Bay Area has its own kind of beauty, indoors and out:
- Spring brings fresh color and soft light in places like Blake Garden in Kensington or the trails around Lake Anza in Tilden Park
- Summer means long days and golden grasses at Garin Regional Park or the open hillsides in the Berkeley Hills
- Fall offers warmth, cozy textures, and earlier sunsets—whether you’re wandering a quiet trail at Redwood Regional Park or enjoying time together at home in Alameda
- Winter brings cooler temperatures and softer light—perfect for slower-paced sessions, both indoors and out
The Bay Area’s mild climate means most locations work beautifully year-round. No matter the season, we’ll choose a setting that suits your family and the feeling you want your photos to hold.
The best time might not depend on the calendar—it’s more about what this chapter looks like for your family and what you want to remember from it.
5. Celebrate Milestones—or the Everyday
Whether you’re welcoming a new baby, documenting a first birthday, enjoying time with grandparents, or simply want to remember this beautiful, messy period of life—family photos are a way to hold onto what matters.
It doesn’t need to be a big event to be worth capturing. Some of the most meaningful images come from the quieter, in-between moments.
6. Flexibility Is Part of the Plan
Schedules shift, and kids have their own ideas. My goal is to meet you where you are and plan something that feels easy and real — not staged or rushed.
Finding the Right Time for Your Family Photos
The best time for family photos isn’t really about light or weather — it’s about when your family feels most like themselves. That looks different for everyone, and figuring that out together is part of how I approach every session.
