Crown Memorial State Beach is one of those East Bay locations that works in almost any light. The wide shoreline, the views across the bay, the open sky — it’s a natural fit for family sessions, and it’s one I come back to often.

This session was with close friends who were getting ready to move cross-country — a goodbye to California and to the East Bay life they’d built here. Crown Beach had been part of that life, and they wanted photographs that captured what it actually felt like before they left.

The dogs weren’t originally part of the plan — but they’re a big part of this family’s life, four of them, sometimes five, and it would have felt wrong to leave them out. The light at Crown Beach in the late afternoon is hard to beat. The sun drops low over the water, and you get that warm, directional light that makes everything look good. The beach itself is relaxed — wide enough to spread out, rarely crowded in the evening, and easy to navigate with little ones.
