Crown Memorial State Beach is one of those East Bay locations that works in almost any light. The wide shoreline, the views across the bay, the open sky — it’s a natural fit for family sessions, and it’s one I come back to often.
A Session Before a Big Family Move
This session was with close friends who were getting ready to move cross-country — a goodbye to California and to the East Bay life they’d built here. Crown Beach had been part of that life, and they wanted photographs that captured what it actually felt like before they left.
There’s a different energy in sessions like this. Everyone just wants to be present, and the photos tend to reflect that.
Why Crown Beach Works for Family Sessions
Their daughter was one at the time, and she set the pace. The dogs weren’t originally part of the plan — but they’re a big part of this family’s life, four of them, sometimes five, and it would have felt wrong to leave them out. Some of the strongest moments came from just letting everyone move around and do their thing near the water.
The light at Crown Beach in the late afternoon is hard to beat. The sun drops low over the water, and you get that warm, directional light that makes everything look good. The beach itself is relaxed — wide enough to spread out, rarely crowded in the evening, and easy to navigate with little ones.
It’s also a great location for families in Alameda who want something close to home but with a backdrop that feels expansive.
