Fort Point is one of my favorite San Francisco locations for family sessions. Just under the Golden Gate Bridge, it’s a place that does a lot of the work for you — the architecture, the light, the views. And for families with kids, it’s genuinely fun to be there.
What Makes It Work for Family Sessions
Kids take to Fort Point immediately. The winding staircases, arched windows, and echoing hallways turn into their own adventure without any prompting. The brick walls and open views of the bay give the photos a graphic, textured feel — different from a park or a beach. And the San Francisco wind, which is almost always present, adds movement and energy that you can’t manufacture.
The best moments here tend to happen when families stop thinking about the camera. A sibling whispering something. A dad getting climbed on. A kid discovering something through a window. Those are usually the images people come back to.
Fort Point for Maternity Sessions
This location works just as well for maternity sessions. The light inside the fort is soft and directional, and the contrast between the historic interior and the open bay views creates something you don’t get at most outdoor locations. It’s a space that tends to photograph well for maternity sessions.
Practical Notes
Location: Fort Point National Historic Site, Marine Drive, San Francisco, CA 94129 — just beneath the Golden Gate Bridge
Hours: Thursday through Monday, 10am–5pm. Roof access closes at 4:30pm. The exterior is accessible 7 days a week. I recommend arriving close to opening — it’s quieter and less crowded early in the day.
Parking: Lot right at the site. I’ve never had trouble finding a spot.
Restrooms: Available just outside the main building near the parking lot.
Accessibility: The upper levels are only accessible by stairs. Families with strollers or wheelchairs can still use the first level, which offers some variety for photos.
Wind: The top level, directly under the Golden Gate Bridge, can be quite windy. The views up there are worth it — but I always give families a heads up in advance and save that level for the end of the session.
