As an Oakland-based newborn photographer, I’m often asked about the best time to book a newborn session. My flexible, lifestyle photography style means the best time is what works for your family. Let’s explore the details to help you make an informed choice.
Capturing Photos During the First 2 Weeks
During the first two weeks, your newborn is typically sleepier and more flexible. This time frame can be ideal for capturing those tiny details, from flaky skin to delicate features and serene moments. Lifestyle photography, however, offers flexibility, and photos can be taken anytime during the newborn phase.
Scheduling Earlier
-
In the earliest stages, your baby is tiny and will never be this small again. You may want to remember the tiny details, the flakes of skin, and their furry ears before your baby grows and changes even more.
-
It can be difficult to establish a routine in the early days, which makes it a great time to document the raw, natural moments of adjusting to life with your newborn.
-
Newborns can develop baby acne around 3.5-4 weeks which is harmless and clears on its own, but is generally not ideal for photos. We can always check in to evaluate ahead of the session.
Scheduling Later
-
Waiting a bit longer allows you to settle into a routine and get to know your baby better.
-
As your baby becomes more alert and interactive, you can capture smiles, eye contact, and other expressions that showcase their emerging personality. This can be a wonderful time to document your baby’s growing interactions and responses.
-
If you choose to breastfeed or had surgery, waiting allows more time for you to heal and to adjust to breastfeeding.
Your Baby’s Development as It Relates to Photos
The first 3 months of your baby’s life are filled with incredible milestones. Each baby develops at their own pace, but here are some general guidelines. As an experienced early childhood special educator, I always remind parents to stay in touch with their pediatrician and share any concerns.
Initial Weeks:
At first, your baby may not have much head control and might be a bit wobbly. You will be fully supporting your baby, and we will be cautious about positions to ensure their safety. We’ll capture portraits of your baby in your arms, on your chest, on a blanket, in the crib/bassinet, and detailed shots.
Gaining Strength:
As your baby gains strength, they’ll start lifting their head off your chest and shoulder (with support). During tummy time, they’ll build strength to lift their head higher and for longer periods. This is a great time to capture photos in baby gyms or on a blanket. Your baby will also learn to hold onto objects, and I always love capturing a photo of your baby’s finger wrapped around yours.
Developing Vision:
Your baby’s vision is still developing. As they become more alert, they’ll focus on your face during feedings. Around one month, they’ll begin noticing bold, high-contrast images. By two months, their eyes will be more coordinated, allowing them to track objects better. At this stage, babies are generally more alert and interactive. Cooing begins, and you can enjoy sweet back-and-forth interactions.
Capturing Photos Between 5-8+ Weeks
Around 5-8 weeks, your baby might be past the peak of fussiness and baby acne stages. This period is perfect for capturing your baby as they start to show more personality and engagement. You’ll have had time to settle into a routine, making it easier to plan and enjoy your photo session. I always love to try to capture little smiles when I can and around 3 months you will hear your first little laughs. I promise your heart will melt.
No matter when you decide to book your newborn session, you’ll treasure your photos as your baby grows and will look back in awe at how tiny they once were. My style is flexible, so whatever timeframe you decide on will be the perfect time, and we’ll capture special moments and connections that you’ll cherish forever.
